Prof. Jose David Lapuz
Prof. Jose David Lapuz, a well-known Rizal scholar and professor, delivered a lecture on the life and philosophy of Gat. Apolinario Mabini on July 23, 2012 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at the Bulwagang Balagtas, Ninoy Aquino Library and Learning Resources Center.

Attended by the students of the University, the seminar was organized by Prof. Ma. Rhodora Agustin's CWTS class (BA History 1-1) with the assistance of the PUP Samahan Ng Mga Mag-aaral Ng Kasaysayan.  It was an activity accomplished to commemorate the life, contributions, and ideas of the great brain of the Philippine Revolution.

Prof. Lapuz highlighted not only the life-history of Mabini but also his philosophy, contributions to the country, and the controversies that hounded him.

Prof. Lapuz also clarified some issues concerning Mabini, especially his description as "sublime paralytic" by a great majority of Filipinos.  According to him, that description is un-fittingly appropriated for the hero because it was but paraplegia which caused paralysis in his physique.

Paraplegia, according to Prof. Lapuz, is not a simple paralysis like polio but a complete paralysis of the lower half of the body including both legs, usually due to the damage of the spinal cord.

The lecture came with several renditions of flamenco by the Flamenco Andaluz de Manila which delighted the university officials, faculty members and students present.

The BA History Students in their dance grooves
The BA History students of PUP held an acquaintance party at the south wing of PUP's Main Building on Friday, July 13, at 6 o'clock in the evening.

The purpose of the Party was to foster sense of camaraderie among the students of the various levels so that their participation in the activities of the Department of History and the PUPSMK would be at par best and unfaltering.

Prof. Mc Donald Pascual, one of the senior advisers of PUPSMK, scolded the students for their slow actions and late participation regarding the party.  He exclaimed that "No organization would persist without money!"  He further emphasized that no organization would turn out successful if there is no concerted effort among the officers and members.

Prof. Marlon Agoy-agoy concurred to the statement of Prof. Pascual.  He said that all of the members must participate promptly and cooperatively.

The party, which was held the last time five years ago, was enjoyed though by the students who showed their talents in dancing.

The Acquaintance Party was hosted by Remson De Leoz of BA History 3-1.

The BA History General Assembly was held, through the sponsorship of the PUP Samahan Ng Mga Mag-aaral Ng Kasaysayan (PUPSMK) on Friday, July 13, 2012.

The program was held in order to inform the students of the different activities to be done by PUPSMK, as well as by the Department of History, its mother academic unit of PUP.

The Orientation
By tradition, the officers-elect are those who organize and execute the program of the General Assembly which normally includes their Oath-taking Ceremony.

In the orientation, the faculty members of the Department of History and the dean of the College of Arts were invited in order to orient the students, especially the freshmen, on the different activities to be done.  The faculty members who graced the occasion were Prof. Mc Donald Domingo M. Pascual, president of the PUP History Faculty Association, Prof. Marlon Agoy-agoy, Prof. Maria Rhodora Agustin, Prof. Anna Rose Hull, Mr. Jayson Payumo and Prof. Diosdado Franco.  On the other hand, Dr. Corazon Coloma, former chairperson of the Department, and Atty. Joanna Aboga-Liao followed while Dr. Buan failed to grace the occasion.

The orientation included the message of Prof. Sebastian, talk on the BA History Curriculum and the Faculty by Prof. Pascual, and introduction of the Gabay at Sanay sa Kasaysayan by Prof. Hull.

The Inauguration of the new PUPSMK President
Meantime, the officers-elect were sworn in to their respective offices by Prof. Raul Sebastian who represented Dr. Buan due to her failure to appear.  The inaugurated officers are to wit:

Ryan Tan, new president of PUPSMK
     Ryan Tan, President
     Geneva Urizar, Executive Vice President
Axle Tugano, Vice President for Plans and Programs
Gerwill Cruz, Vice President for Finance
Hairish Lignes, Vice President for Public Relations
     Ghied Gustillo, Secretary-General
     Joshua Crismo, Auditor-General
     Michael Agtarap, 1st year Representative
     Alexander Aguinaldo, 2nd year Representative
     Abel Ubaldo, 3rd year Representative
     Elisor Guieb, 4th year Representative

The ex-officio member, Jordan Matuguinas, was not sworn in anymore though he was at the stage during the inauguration of the new officers.  This is because he is the immediate past president of the society, and under the new PUPSMK Constitution, he will still accordingly take part in the Executive Committee of the organization.

After the oath-taking of the Executive Officers, four new committee chairs were sworn in to office by President Ryan Tan namely Joe Ceneta of the Committee on Sports and Cultural Presentations, Vernice Furto of the Committee on Protocol, Jamaica Basco of the Committee on Alumni Relations and Mar Edward San Diego of the Committee on Historical and Cultural Education.  The other chairs were not inducted to office because they are already members of the Executive Committee.

The Speeches
Jordan Matuguinas, the out-going president of the PUPSMK, made a farewell speech by enumerating the laudable achievements of the organization within and outside PUP.  According to him, PUPSMK became one of the most promising student organizations in the university by conducting a lot of activities yet there was no recognition accorded to it as one of the outstanding organizations.

The out-going President, while expressing his sentiments, reiterated the need for PUPSMK to continue the path of climbing towards the summit of success.  He challenged the in-coming officers to continue what he and Jerome Permejo, his predecessor, and all of the members of the organization to support PUPSMK and the Department of History in attaining their visions.

After his oath-taking, Ryan Tan, the new president, made a sentimental speech.  He thanked those who showed concern to him and, especially to PUPSMK.  While teary-eyed, he recounted what happened to him while the Department of History was having an extension program in the Municipality of Mogpog in the Province of Marinduque.  He said that while suffering from unexpected gastronomic pain, his friends and mentors were full of care to him.

President Tan's speech, above all, challenged the members of PUPSMK to continue their support to the organization by taking part in all of its activities.
